The Theta Tau Sigma Chapter was chartered on August 15, 1983 in the Northern Virginia area. The seven men who pioneered this feat were:

  • Malcolm O. Ames
  • Ambrose W. Bailey
  • Charles Bowen
  • James E. Gibson
  • Carlton L. Jeter
  • Curtis O. Porter
  • Caesar A. Roy, III

These seven young men were all from or lived in the Northern Virginia area at the time and felt that a chapter was very much needed in the local area since the closest chapter in Virginia was located in Richmond.

The chapter sponsored many car washes to raise money for scholarships during the early years of its existence. The very first informational meeting for new members was held at the Holiday Inn in Dumfries, VA off the I-95 exit. No line developed from this informational meeting, however, a few years later the very first initiates were inducted: Bro. Dr. Ralph W. Brooks and Bro. Rev. Preston Jordan, both of Manassas, VA.

In 1984, the very first Blue and White Scholarship Ball was held at the Crystal City Marriott Hotel in Arlington, VA. The scholarship recipient was Mr. Nathaniel Bostick, a student from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) – Annandale. Today, Nate is an electrical engineer in Northern Virginia.

In 1989, Theta Tau Sigma chartered the Rho Tau Chapter at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with 7 young men. This provided a tremendous boost after four years of tireless work that at times seemed like a fruitless effort. The young students were impressive; being top student leaders and academic scholars, they had the entire university talking about Phi Beta Sigma. The chapter started work immediately on forming an undergraduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at the University, but would have to wait. Due to the governing structure of Zeta, an alumnae chapter in the area first had to be formed.

The alumni chapter had made several attempts to support the formation of a Zeta alumnae chapter in the area but had little success. One day, while in the office of Bro. Michael A. Ferby, Soror Cheryl Lucas Hepburn from Virginia State University asked about trying to charter a chapter in Fredericksburg with her mother but she was not having any success. She had recently moved to Fairfax, so Bro. Ferby suggested that she charter a chapter in Fairfax instead. Bro. Ferby supplied her with a list of Zetas living in the metropolitan area to contact about chartering a chapter.

Four months later the sorority granted her a charter to form Omicron Theta Zeta Chapter in Fairfax. Soror Cheryl Lucas Hepburn became the first Basilieus of the chapter and within four months her job relocated her out of the area. The Zeta Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at George Mason University was chartered within two years of the alumnae chapter on November 15th, 1992, with many of the young ladies recruited by Sigmas on the campus.
